Liverpool To Raid The January Sales, But Who Should They Sign?
BRENDAN RODGERS has a lot to think about at the moment. Getting back to winning ways is first and foremost. The two results against Stoke and Leicester have gone some way to remedying that. Then there’s solving the problem which is Mario Balotelli, getting Daniel Sturridge back to full fitness, and anticipating whether Steven Gerrard will sign a new contract. And all that’s on top of some much needed reinforcements come January.
There have been plenty of names thrown around ahead of the opening day of the window on January 1, with the likes of Martin Odegaard, Edinson Cavani, and Mats Hummels all being linked with a move to Anfield. But who do we need? Who do we want? And more importantly who will we get?
Martin Odegaard
He’s the Norwegian wonderkid playing for Stromsgodset. He’s 15-years-old, has the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United looking at him and already has three full international caps to his name.
The attacking midfielder – a lifelong Liverpool fan – took a look around Melwood and the city last week and will be eligible to sign a professional contract on his 16th birthday on December 17th. It looks almost certain the youngster will join the club, but with his education in football still far from being complete, he’ll be no quick fix to Rodgers’ current problems.
Edinson Cavani
Which is where this man could come in. Edinson Cavani would be a huge addition to the Liverpool attack. Literally. The 6 ft 2 in striker is in the middle of a tug of war contest between Arsene Wenger and Rodgers, and he would certainly add the firepower Balotelli and Lambert are yet to really provide.
They’ll have to stump up a lot of money, and with Manchester United also on the prowl it could become a congested market for the Uruguayan which will only hike the price up further.
However, signing the man who has already bagged 12 goals this season, including five in five in the Champions League would be a real statement of intent for the club to get back in the top four. Betdaq currently list them at 14/5 to finish in the Champions League spots, behind Arsenal and Manchester United, but if they get Cavani ahead of the two, then it could be a different story.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan
The Borussia Dortmund man has been out of favour for the Black and Yellows and has only played nine league games for the club despite them sitting rock bottom of the Bundesliga.
The Armenian is in just his second season with the German club after signing from Shakhtar Donetsk and it’s thought that Jurgen Klopp is ready to let the midfielder for pastures new. Rodgers did try to sign him in back in the summer of 2013, and it looks as though he could finally get his man come the end of January.
