I think you'll find that the media have a thing about Rafa as the recent series of poor performances particularly those at home contrast starkly with those of United. What is it now 5 draws at home in last 7, some of which against the Stokes and Hulls?
I'd say the article makes a fair point, but it goes on for so long, its a case 'he doth protest too much'.
Anyhow, Rafa's leaving isnt he?

hi Miguel, First to clarify the euro ban. When LFC were banned from participating in european cups so were all the other English clubs. The real issue is that Man Utd profited from the birth of the Premiership in a much better way than Liverpool did because they had a more astute financial management, better a mechandising strategy. This was also aided by the introduction of a large number of youngsters such as Becham Giggs, etc at the same time, which Ferguson ably built a team around. At this time LFC had just lost Daglish and didn't replace him well enough (my opinion) Man Utd were winning and so kept beneftting more from Sky deals etc. At the same time they were luck that Old Trafford could be expanded from approx 40K to 80K today while Anfield could not. As time past Liverpool stopped being able to compete at the very top of the transfer market. (Torres apart) while Utd buy 30M players each year.
The euro ban and EPL formation does not change the history of football in England, and as things stand Utd are close to matching Liverpool's 18th titles. British teams are very proud of their history and rightly so. Another point, today's present is next years future, why we shouldn't be proud of today achievements tomorrow? Similarly why shouldnt we be proud today of what our team achieved in the past?

With regards to your second point, my opinion is that since the introduction of transfer windows, newspapers need more stories to fill their pages. The more controvertial the news, the more it sells....even though it is not true. The only confirmed news you can find about LFC is on the official web site. However news there apears later because it is first confirmed. Amongst all the rumours and invented stories there also lies the truth or part of it. The above article was a great one because it didn't try to invent news, it just focussed on what seems to have been happening at LFC. The writer also gives his opinion, but doesnt try to state that they are 100% correct...just his opinion. A last point, everyone can post on the internet, so what you believe is up to you. The best is to focus on the game on the pitch rather than behind the scenes.

"It would take a massive amount of luck for a new manager to improve on Rafa’s work enough for it to almost guarantee the league. And if that amount of luck was around, ......."

That would probably be the luck normally reserved for Man U, which includes a raft of unbelievable Old Trafford refereeing decisions.

Rafa does not have the comfort of 'owner belief' that has been for years enjoyed by Fergie. I think he uses the press (albeit misguidedly) to holler all the way across the Atlantic that things can be improved upon for all if he was proffered that same belief.

He must love Liverpool as much as any avid supporter. To me, his situation is likened to that of a child in that failing US marriage.

He is not the only child in this bizarre marriage. The elder Parry is keeping a very low profile under the Gillett umbrella, afraid of doing his real duties, yet sitting quietly undoing the efforts of the other.

Another self interested party in Rafa's position would have been gone long ago, including the 'Nameless One' (or would that be Blameless).

Perhaps then, the defensive nature of his sides more recent tactics is a direct reflection of his tenuous management situation.

Unlike some supporters I am prepared to gripe about Rafa. Matters like his apparent blindness to the wealth of non-spanish speaking talent that exists in the reserves. Players who fail to make the 1st team despite good performances . This coupled with his seemingly endless belief in one or two fairly untalented 1st team regulars.

How is it that younger players like Leto can perform so badly in England yet play so brilliantly in Greece.

Perhaps the latinos suffer the same problems the Brit suffers abroad, or perhaps under his regime and fathership, ones confidence can be destroyed (Babel,??, Ngog??).

Having said all that, remember, Fergies early years were far from notable.

So, give Parry the boot; sell the club and be rid of Waldorf and Stadler; Give Rafa the power to get the players he needs, and at least 15 more years. Then we set about wiping Man U from the record books (if we really cared that is).

I understand your points about the press but lfc get treated no differently in the media than any other side.

This article just sounds like you're playing the victimisation card.

Rafa's rant was viewed by most as ill judged and ill timed. He can't have it both ways. If you dance with the devil.....

As a yank there are two aspects to being a LFC fan that I'll never understand unless a local fan explains it to me:

In response to Mallia's comment about the number of Utd. league titles, why does that tally matter? It's my understanding that the 5 year euro ban of LFC in the 80's slowed down the growth of footballer wages in England, in comparison to the NFL (not the round ball) in america where in the 80's wages grew exponentially and only recently have balanced out due to team salary caps. Utd. was built after Dalglish retired. The premiership became a different league. It's definitely a different climate now. So why do people keep track of the League tally when it really isn't a statement about the organizations current strength, but only history? I bring up the NFL only because ownership is normally passed down through the generations amongst one family.

The second thing I'll never understand: directed to Jim Boardman

I'm used to a reputable news source for sports related rumors (contract talks, extensions, salary): in the U.S. ESPN sports center does the job, and everything else, for any real fan, is ignored or is understood as a good laugh unless someone is caught cheating on their wife etc. (taboo personal accusations always seem to be taken seriously regardless of the source). Unfortunately, ESPN doesn't cover football (roundball) gossip. So, is it the confluence of cultures that makes people not direct with reporting on football, is football not a real business enterprise in Europe (like other sports in North America), or are tabloids just that much more powerful in Britain than in comparison to U.S. tabloids. Again, I understand rags sell copies when there are personal accusations. So I'd be satisfied if you could tell me the name of some sources that I should never really listen to/read, as well as sources you would swear by. Thanks, to the both of you.

Most of the fans criticism is borne out of the fact that United will level Liverpool at 18 each with regards to league titles. This is a huge blow to us fans but at the face of it Benitez has little blame about this because most of Utd leagues were won before he arrived, and one must be honest to admit that this United team is awesome albeit expensively assembled. It may sound madness to many but probably the pressure on the Liverpool players would be much less if Utd were to start leading the league winners race. (19-18)
