@Jim. Well it’s an interesting point. I believe it was born out of neccesity rather than choice, but whether or not he believes it is now his ‘best’ formation, who knows? I guess he’ll already have in mind what formation he is going to play next season and I’m sure the signings he makes will be in line with whichever formation he decides to employ.

I have ti say, by the by, I’m not particularly enthused with what has materialised so far. I love Alonso and a Barry/Alonso swap pains me, if it does happen. I would love to see quality players arriving up front and in wide positions, i’m not convinced Riera fits the bill.

@Martin: Did Rafa go 4-2-3-1 last season because he thought it was the best formation going, or because he thought it was the best formation to use his best players in?

I still think we’ll see 4-4-2 next season from time to time, and Babel could well be used alongside Torres as you say. Also Babel could possibly play on the right if we had another striker to partner Torres.

I think if Alonso goes we will have to buy another central midfielder won’t we? Downing is a decent player, but where does babel then play? Maybe Rafa is actually going to go 4-4-2, possibly using Babel up front, downing on the left with masch and gerrard in the middle. Now if we could just sign Bentley…
